Gido Vermeulen and his technical staff have been relieved of their duties with the Egypt national volleyball team after failing to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

After performing well at the 2019 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Cup, finishing in 10th place, it almost seemed like a formality for Egypt to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

In a group with Tunisia, Algeria and Cameroon, Egypt finished in 2nd place behind Tunisia. As there is only one spot available for African teams, this meant that Egypt will not participate in Japan.

Despite the outcome essentially coming down to one match against Tunisia in the qualification group, it was enough for Ahmed Abdel-Dayem, head of the temporary committee for the affairs of the Egyptian Volleyball Federation, to remove Vermeulen from his post as head coach.

The Dutchman, who has a wealth of experience in European volleyball especially with his home country, will now have to find new work along with the entirety of his technical staff.

Egypt will now turn their attention to the next African Volleyball Cup in 2021, where they will look to improve on 2019’s 4th place finish.
