Led by outside hitter Austin Matautia’s team-high 13.5 kills, the Rainbow Warrior volleyball team was able to put away Stevens Institute of Technology in straight sets (25-21, 25-21, 25-9) Thursday night at the Stan Sheriff Center in the inaugural Texaco Classic.
Hawaii (1-0) was in a back-and-forth battle in the first two sets with the Ducks (0-1) as Stevens Institute stayed the course and made life difficult for the Warriors, recording 11 team blocks throughout the match.
The Ducks were led by opposite hitter David Lehman’s game-high 17.5 kills in the loss, hitting .161 percent as a team.
For the Warriors, they received help from Matautia’s offense as well as opposite hitter Rado Parapunov’s 11 kills. As a team, Hawaii posted a .351 hitting percentage on the night, along with 34 assists — 31 of those assists coming by way of Joe Worsley.
Now with a win under his belt, head coach Charlie Wade and his team will look to carry tonight’s momentum into their match against Juniata College tomorrow night at the Stan Sheriff Center. First serve is set for 7 p.m. HT.
