Both No. 17 Iowa and No. 10 Penn State began with slow starts on Saturday night as a crucial Big Ten victory hangs in the balance in Iowa City. The Nittany Lions entered the contest riding an 11-game win streak against Big Ten West opponents and have taken the last three games against the Hawkeyes under coach James Franklin, but the Hawkeyes defense was determined to break the streak.
The game began as the rock fight many expected between these two stout defenses, but the Nittany Lions offense got going against Iowa’s secondary in the second quarter when Sean Clifford found KJ Hamler for the only touchdown of the half. The Hawkeyes offensive line, which struggled last weekend against Michigan allowed just two sacks on Stanley through three quarters by the Nittany Lions defense, who led the FBS in sacks at 5.0 per game entering the contest. Another touchdown-less quarter followed halftime after a slew of Penn State penalties toward the end of the third reversed two touchdowns during the same drive. The Nittany Lions settled for a field goal instead, going into the fourth with a 10-6 lead.
