North Carolina’s NASCAR king Richard Petty celebrates 83rd birthday, online auction helps foundation

As the king of NASCAR motor racing is celebrating his 83rd birthday this week, Richard Petty has another title.Petty has the heart of a philanthropist, but COVID-19 has put the brakes on fundraising — canceling or postponing all foundation events. “Usually in May we have a big fundraiser, ‘Blue Jeans and Boots,'” said Rebecca Petty Moffitt, executive director of the Petty Family Foundation. “Last year, we raised about $250,000. We like to put it back in the community by giving to Victory Junction, Paralyzed Veterans of America, Hospice of the Piedmont. We feel bad because right now we can’t answer requests.”Moffitt said the foundation’s fundraising is off about 95%.”It is frustrating to the fans and the people that want to come because we had to close our museums as well,” Moffitt said.The foundation is racing to fill those needs with an online auction featuring more than 60 celebrity items, including a Marcos Ambrose framed firesuit, and several autographed items from Petty, including hats, boots and belt buckles.The online auction will be available through Sunday, July 12.Click here to view it.
