Syracuse, N.Y. — Thursday’s high school sports scene across Central New York included the first football game of the fall. Here are the highlights from Sept. 5.
» Poolside, led by a quintet of All-CNY returners, the Christian Brothers Academy girls swimming and diving team got by Mexico, 97-86. The Brothers bring back Kaitlyn Bushnell, who won the 50-yard freestyle (25.57), Lauren Kelly, who paced the field in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.07), Kayla Newman, who was first in the 200-yard (2:01.26) and 500-yard freestyle (5:29.14), Darien Tompkins, the top finisher in the 100-yard backstroke (1:04.91), and Ally Howard.
Tompkins and Howard were also members of the winning 200-medley relay squad, recording a time of 2:01.14. Alexa von Holtz, the Tigers lone returning All-Star, won a pair of individual races Thursday, capturing the 200-yard individual medley (2:10.51) and the 100-yard butterfly (57.82).
» In girls soccer, Emma Basher led Hamilton to a big 7-1 victory over Owen D. Young by pouring in five goals.
» Led by quarterback Nyki Dewberry’s two passing touchdowns and one rushing score, the PSLA at Fowler football team rocked Phoenix, 58-28.
» In boys golf, West Genesee edged Liverpool 194-197 to stay undefeated at 4-0. Jake Weaver (37), Kevin McDermott (38), and Dan Benetti (39) led the charge for the Wildcats, while Dylan Husted carded a round-best 32 and Spencer Baum shot a 34 for the Warriors.
