Downtown Richmond to see increase in chess playing – Richmond Standard

Two free Family Chess Days are coming to downtown Richmond this month and next, followed by a ribbon-cutting of an initiative to increase chess playing opportunities downtown.

All ages and skill levels are welcome to the fun events hosted in partnership with the West Coast Chess Alliance and Richmond Main Street Initiative.

The first event will be held Saturday, Aug. 19 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Community Green Space at Harbour Way and Macdonald Avenue. The event will coincide with Chill with a Cop.

And then on Saturday, Sep. 16 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., a Family Chess Day will be held at the 9th annual Spirit & Soul Festival at Macdonald Avenue: Harbour Way-13th Street.

And then on Sept. 21 at 1 p.m., a Main Street Community Chess Park Ribbon Cutting will be held at the Community Green Space at Harbour Way and Macdonald Avenue.

“Join us in kicking-off this exciting new downtown project,” said TC Ball of the West Coast Chess Alliance. “The Richmond Chess Initiative collaborative is turning Downtown Richmond into the Main Street Community Chess Park, a district-wide destination bringing chess play to the community through pop-up matches, regularly scheduled family chess days, and special events.”
