Central Lakes College was in attack mode and it paid off in a three set sweep of Northland in a matchup Wednesday, Oct. 9.
Nicole Kortan pounded out nine kills, served two aces and led the team in digs with 12 as the Raiders won by scores of 25-18, 25-18 and 25-11.
With the win the Raiders improved to 7-2 in division play and have a firm hold on second place behind Mesabi, who the Raiders defeated earlier this season.
Jade Porter collected eight kills while Maggie Fellerman tallied four kills and six blocks.
As a team the Raiders were charged with 19 attack errors, but they ended up with 32 kills as a team and frustrated the Pioneers at the net all night.
Haley Schleper also put a strong effort with nine digs and Raider coach Jane Peterson gave credit to her for a good passing game.
“Haley can control the ball when she is back there,” Peterson said. “She has thought of herself as a hitter all her life but she is a good passer and defender.”

Division: CLC 7-2.
Overall: CLC 9-10.
Next: hosts Vermilion 6:30 pm Friday.
The Raiders were a little slow to start the game as the Pioneers built a 7-4 lead in Set One. That grew to 12-8 deficit before CLC responded with seven of the next nine points to take a 15-13 lead. They outscored Northland 10-5 the rest of the way to win.
Three kills by Kortan help CLC in building a 5-1 lead in Set Two and a block by Fellerman brought a 24-16 lead and a Pioneer timeout. The Raiders went on to win.
An ace from Schleper made it 9-6 Raiders in Set Three. The Raiders ran off 10 points in a row to build a commanding 20-10 lead and they went on to close out the match. In the third game Fellerman collected two kills and she and Lillee Hardee combined to block two Pioneer shots.
“Maggie hit a couple of shots out, but then she reset her mind,” Peterson said. “You could see that in the third set she went back to getting on top of it and swinging hard instead of being unsure. We have been working on the mental game a lot. It maybe isn’t something people see but it is exciting to know that she doesn’t have to be struck in a un-sure place. She knows how to get out of it and that is exciting.
“We are just trying to be a better team all together with positivity and encouragement. Tonight we could do that because we passed really well. It looked calm, partly because they weren’t the toughest servers we have faced.”
