18-year-old killed in Payson crash after racing cars, troopers say – KSL.com

PAYSON — One person was killed in a car crash Monday after allegedly participating in a race on state Route 147 in Payson, Utah Highway Patrol troopers said.

Eric E. Blackham, 18, of Provo, died at the scene of the crash, UHP officials said. The wreck happened near 8000 South on SR-147, at about 5:15 p.m., troopers said.

A blue 1975 Ford F250 and a 2004 white Chevy Silverado were both northbound on SR-147 when the Chevy’s driver pulled alongside the Ford’s driver, later identified as Blackham.

Both cars contained a driver and a passenger. Witnesses told troopers it appeared the cars were mutually racing.

While speeding, one of the cars sideswiped the other, troopers said. As a result, Blackham drove off the left side of the road, overcorrected, then went off the right side of the road and rolled over.

He was ejected and died on scene, troopers said. The passenger in the Ford, a juvenile, was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The occupants of the Chevy were not injured and troopers said everyone involved in the wreck was 18 years old or younger.
